2021 in review

You can’t just go and not share the results of the year

• We held the School of Superpowers for LBTQI women in Lutsk and the online discussion “Prospects for the depathologization of transgender identity in Ukraine,” which, along with representatives of international organizations, was joined for the first time (!) by representatives of the Ministry of Health! The discussion resulted in our developing recommendations for the Ministry of Health on the process of demythologizing F64 as part of the ICD-11 reform!

• We initiated the campaign “Push so that you are NOT pushed around” in support of anti-discrimination bill #5488.

• We initiated the Women’s March 2021, which was joined by more than 4 000 women and men — an absolute record in the entire history of the March!

• We initiated and held Trans*March 2021 in Kyiv, timed to the removal of the “transsexualism” diagnosis from ICD-11.In 2021 we grew!

• This year our bright map gained one more marker — an Insight regional office appeared in the lovely city of Ternopil! So in total, besides Kyiv, we have 10 regional offices in different regions, where in 2021 we held 940 events for the community!

• We opened a community center for LGBTQI+ people in Kramatorsk, where everyone in the community can take part in educational events, receive support, and share it with those who need it.

• At the Kyiv community center we held 276 engaging educational and entertainment events attended by more than 2 thousand people from the community.

Our legal and psychological services also did great work this year:

• In 2021 our lawyers provided 370 legal consultations, including consultations for trans* people. We are handling 2 cases at the European Court of Human Rights and 15 cases in Ukrainian courts and with the police.
• And something truly wonderful — this year we (for the first time in Ukraine!) secured 3 verdicts against attackers that recognized a homophobic motive!
• We held 2 one-day trainings on “Safety during peaceful assemblies” for residents of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and 2 one-day trainings on “Ethical standards, gender and LGBTQI+” for journalists and editors of media outlets in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
• In 2021 the psychological service of Insight NGO provided 1 377 psychological consultations and held 109 psychotherapy groups and lectures (among them 3 long-term therapeutic projects, art therapy classes, and psychoeducational lectures for the community).
