Bill 5488
The LGBTQI+ community, feminists, and other social groups in Ukraine constantly face attacks from conservative and far-right groups, assaults on educational events, and intimidation of activists and community members.
Current legislation is not enough to counter such crimes. Most often these acts are classified as “hooliganism,” and those responsible go unpunished.
Why do we demand the adoption of Bill 5488?
Bill 5488 proposes adding the commission of an offense motivated by intolerance to the aggravating circumstances for administrative offenses.
It is meant to protect the most vulnerable among us — those who constantly face violations of their rights and violence because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, skin color, HIV status, ethnic and social background, and more.
On June 5, 2021, together with a number of other leading human rights organizations, we held the action “PUSH SO YOU’RE NOT PUSHED” outside the President’s Office, demanding the adoption of Bill 5488 and reminding the authorities that Ukrainian legislation must guarantee safety for every one of its citizens.
Hate crimes must be investigated properly, and those responsible must be held accountable for them!
