Young people understand the importance of civil partnerships and support the adoption of children – U-report survey results 

54% of respondents have a positive opinion about civil partnerships in Ukraine with the possibility of child adoption. Almost 70% of respondents believe that heterosexual and homosexual people are equal in their rights.

These are the results of a survey conducted by the UNICEF digital platform U-report in November 2023 in the platform’s chatbot. The survey involved 5880 people from different regions of Ukraine. Detailed figures are available here in Ukrainian. The majority of respondents (5351) are young people aged 14 to 34.

Among young people, 80% of women and 52% of men believe that heterosexual and homosexual people have equal rights. The opposite opinion is shared by 11% of women and 39% of men. 

68% of respondents personally know a lesbian, gay, transgender or bisexual person, and 56% support civil partnerships with the possibility of child adoption. 

Young women show more support and understanding for LGBT+ people. 

For example, 66% of women and 36% of men say they would support a friend in any situation in response to a coming out. 

10% of men and 2% of women respondents said they would try to convince him/her that he/she was wrong, and 18% of men and 2% of women would stop communicating. 

“This is a very important survey in the context of Ukraine’s transformation, as it is young people who will soon be deciding on important issues related to the country’s development.

Young people have demonstrated their choice towards a European society where LGBTQI people have equal rights and are protected from violence and discrimination. 

The vast majority, namely 69% of young people, believe that heterosexual and homosexual people should have equal rights. Importantly, the majority of young people believe that LGBTQI people have the right to enter into partnerships and adopt children. Such responses demonstrate the high support for human rights and democracy among the younger generation of Ukrainians,” comments Olena Shevchenko, head of the NGO Insight.
